Karla Nolan
Oil and Pastel Artist
About the Artist

“Life is an onion and one peels it crying” -- French proverb
Escapism. Defying time. Serenity and solace. Reliving and recalling treasured memories. These are the reasons I paint and produce artwork. The acts of creativity are surely some of the most pleasant and yet difficult of all experiences. Color and form are my special friends. The challenge of perfecting the artwork is monumental and exhilarating. This effort has grown to be both friend and family, which are the two most important aspects of my life.
I have always been enthralled with fine art but have been largely self-taught in it. Being an experimenter and, I am told by a teacher, an intuitive learner, I have benefited from studying books, visiting museums and galleries around the world, and by learning various painting techniques from several friends and relatives who are artists. I have studied with Clive Tyler, the pastelist, and am presently studying oil painting with Daniel Edmondson, also.

"'Pingree Park End of Day"
Since I was a child I have been mesmerized by Edgar Degas' paintings of theatre and ballet scenes. In the past several years I have returned to both oil and pastel paintng, concentrating on landscapes, sunsets, and floral scenes.

"Poppy Line" (pastel)
While traveling through New Mexico, and later Wales, I became interested in learning the art of silk painting, particularly for two-dimensional works. I use silk paints, rather than silk dyes, which are similar to watercolor paints and paint them onto stretched silk, which is my "canvas".
"Sunny Day Red Mountain"
(mixed media; hand painted silk sky, handmade papers, pressed materials)
In oil, silk and pastel media, I draw upon gardening and travel experiences, resulting in a "repeat visit" of my memories.
In 2003 I was honored to win the Ninth Annual Northern Colorado Artists Association "Paint the Town" First Place award and in late 2004 the Edgar Degas Pastel Award from the Colorado Coalition of Artists National Fall Show.

"Monet's Giverny Poppies"
Presently I am represented in Fort Collins, Colorado, at Meko's Gallery and at Forma Furniture; at Artique Fine Art Gallery in Denver; Earthwood Collections, in Estes Park, Colorado; and in Grand Lake, Colorado, at Grand Lake Art Gallery with two-dimensional artworks.

"Anemone Trio" (oil)
